THE early 90s brought us bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Green Day.
But one band in Up Holland were searching for fame and fortune, on the verge of their big break and would become one of the biggest names in the Brit-pop movement.
They were of course, The Verve, fronted by lead singer Richard Ashcroft. All four members were students at Up Holland High School.
In March 1991, they were front page news for the Skelmersdale Advertiser after hearing that agents with London-based record company WEA were coming to their gig at St Helens Citadel.
Richard told the Advertiser at the time: “We are all on the dole so we had to save up for quite a while before we could afford to do a demo tape.
“We were really pleased when we heard people were coming up from London to hear us play. We don’t want to be too heavy we just want people to enjoy our music. I think The Verve will be the biggest band ever."
He wasn’t far off with that prediction!
