1938: Five Generations of Girl Power

THIS picture which was published in the Advertiser in January 1994, but was actually taken 57 years previously in 1938.

The picture shows Emma Forshaw of Dyers Lane, Ormskirk on her 100th birthday, with four other generations of her family, taken in their garden.

Emma was a great character in the town. As well as being a pipe smoker she was noted for keeping a parrot which perched on her shoulder.

Brenda Jackson (right of the picture) was eight at the time. She said: “I am sulking as the picture is taken because I had to come home early from Derby Street School.�?

Next in line is Brenda’s mother Ethel, who was married to Gordon Hay of Maghull whose own family weren’t far behind in the longevity stakes. Gordon’s mother lived until she was 103 and was still playing crown green bowls well into her nineties.

Pictured centre is grandmother Louie, formerly Cash until her husband was killed in World War I, and later became Mrs Louis Everett. Then there is great grandmother Emma Rothwell and finally great-great grandmother Emma Forshaw who died a year after the picture was taken.

Grandmother Louie lived at Taylor Avenue, but amazingly the other four generations lived together in a cottage which stood in Dyers Lane.
