1987: Eric Mullis Butchers, Burscough

Posted by Gemma Jaleel on October 25, 2007 10:01 AM |

Jim Smith's father Harry took the shop over from the Walker family whose name is above the prmises in this pre World War I photgraph. Harry Smith is seen here with his brother Bill.

BURSCOUGH butcher Eric Mullis retired from the trade in 1987. Eric had bought his shop on Liverpool Road North 24 years previously from Jim Smith whose father and grandfather ran the business before him.

Jim Smith’s father Harry took the shop over from the Walker family and the name was associated with much of the property around Burscough which they owned at the time.

After spells at butchers in Worcestershire, Ormskirk and Southport, Burscough beckoned. Eric’s wife Alice was working at Lavery’s at the time, so they were working in earshot of each other for several years.

Syd Needham took over Mullis butchers in 1987 and his daughter Catherine recalls fond memories of the shop.

“I was about 11 when my dad took over and we would be at the shop every Saturday. When I was about 15, my sister Andrea and I, would come and do our stint, making burgers and doing the cleaning.

“My dad’s just been trying to keep going what Eric Mullis built up and the Walkers before him and we are still going strong.”
