1989: Peter O'Toole in Holmeswood
THE small hamlet of Holmeswood near Rufford doubled as France for a TV film in 1989.
Farmer Clifford Taylor allowed the film crew to invade his Wiggins Lane fields to shoot “Crossing to Freedom starring Oscar-winning actor Peter O’Toole and based on a book by Nevil Shute (A Town Like Alice and On The Beach).

O’Toole starred opposite American actress Mare Winningham. The story, set in 1940, is about Englishman John Sidney Howard, on holiday in Jura, on the Swiss and French border who has to help a group of children escape the Nazis.
Production manager Don Bell told the Advertiser at the time: “We chose Holmeswood because with its flat land and lack of hedges it resembles France to a certain extent.
