CHRISTMAS is over and we start the New Year with a look back to 25 years ago.
Our first picture shows Burscough schoolboy Colin Burrell who had a lucky escape after falling into the Liverpool-Leeds Canal.
Twelve-year-old Colin saw out 1981 with a splash, but thanks to the quick-thinking of his brother Clive, 13, and friends Gary and John Evans, aged 11 and ten, he was still around to see in 1982.
The boys were hailed as local heroes after they saved Colin’s life as his heavy winter clothes dragged him down into the icy water.
The group were out on a cycling trip and had stopped for a walk on the canal tow path by Glovers Bridge when Colin slipped on some ice and fell in the water.
Brother Clive jumped in after and pushed him to the surface, while Gary and John dragged the drenched boys on to the bank.
Clive told the Advertiser: “I just jumped in, I didn’t think about it. The water was frozen over except for a space just by the bank where Colin fell in. I was scared he would go under the ice.”
