1978: Cycling from the Dray and Horses in Ormskirk

THIS week we go back to the Seventies and join cyclists at the Dray and Horses on Derby Street in Ormskirk.

The pub, now known as Room 47, was the stomping ground for Tony Wood and Dave Shaw who had a small wager on their cycling abilities in 1978.

By the time the big race was staged it had turned into quite an occasion with several “athletes” taking part and sponsorship organised for the National Children’s Homes.

The route followed Greetby Hill, Blythe Lane, Hobcross Lane, Hall Lane, Dicks Lane and finally back up Crosshall Brow into Ormskirk, with Tony having a great lead ahead of Dave.

Tony left Blythe Hall as his opponent started off from the Dray and managed to maintain his lead, romping home by a margin estimated at around five minutes.

The end result was a large crowd of locals waiting for the pair who timed it so they completed the course in time for their Sunday lunch-time pint.
