Three members of the Red Lion 'Codger's Corner' gang, Barry Taylor, Jim Winrow and Len Saunders

THIS week we start with a few old codgers who were making an appeal for the return of some ornaments to their local watering hole in February 1988.

Barry Taylor, Jim Winrow and Len Saunders, regulars at the Red Lion in Burscough, used to have their own place 'Codger's Corner' where they used to sit every time they had a pint.

Landlady Mary Kitts placed four wise monkeys carved from wood which depicted the proverb 'see, speak, hear and do no evil' and a shell owl as a joke on the five men who sat there.

ROCK music of the early 1970s lived on in Parbold back in 1988.


Six old school friends pool musical talents to form band ‘Purple Haze’ to raise money for starving Ethiopians by staging a concert at Parbold Community Centre.


Lead singer Jes Barnes and his brother Eddie, on keyboard, teamed up with friends Alex Candlin and Owen Burdekin and brothers Tim and Paul Osbaldeston.

A whole host of Liverppol and Everton football stars turned out for a golf tournament at Ormskirk Golf Club in 1988


WE are going back twenty years to 1988 when Liverpool and Everton football players turned out for a golf tournament.


Ormskirk Golf Club played host to the Lenton and McComb golf tournament with many personalities from the sporting world turning up to take part.


The picture shows former England footballer Geoff Hurst getting in the swing of things with David Lenton, Everton FC’s Paul Bracewell and Liverpool FC players Kevin McDonald and Gary Gillespie with Ormskirk business entrepreneur Mike McComb and former Liverpool and England footballer Ian Callaghan.
